Sofia and I were recently invited to the opening of an exhibition at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art honoring a man named Dick Polich. If you’re like us, you might have never heard of Dick Polich, or for that matter Polich Tallix, the foundry that bears his name. You may have, on the other hand, heard of Roy Lichtenstein or Frank Stella, marquis names in the art community.
Tucked away in a small town in upstate New York is a building about the size of a football field where some of the most talented artisans labor away behind the scenes, helping artists make their visions a reality. Dick Polich, an MIT trained metallurgist, is the man who’s passion fueled this foundry, one of the most prominent of its kind. Works from PolichTallix can be found all over the world, at museums, memorials, galleries and in major cities under the names of their respective creators. Its truly a mix of old world crafts and modern technology that brings these projects to life. It was truly a please to meet Mr Polich, and to learn more about a world of incredibly talented people who work in the shadows of some of the most talented artists of our time.
