Giovanni Marcus Versace : 2 December 1946 – 15 July 1997  I remember going to that Versace opening, the boutique being unveiled, the fashion show that followed. It was all so special, every detail choreographed. A who’s who in attendance watching the runway, breathless. I remember talking to the owner, him telling me how every specification in the boutique was specifically dictated by Milan. It was an image that was so carefully curated from fabric to display cases.  Baroque print blouses, tailored suits with leopard print lining, chains, straps and medusa. It was a feast for the eyes.

Fast forward 20 years…. The namesake icon a fading silhouette on a distant horizon. The new Versace an empire of women’s and mens ready-to-wear and “couture”, jewelry, handbags, shoes, children’s collection, home collection and fragrances. An era of outlet stores and online sales. So much of that mystical ingredient Gianni mixed into everything he did, watered down like someone trying to get every last drop out of a fine bottle of gin. All that remains are the perennial prints played year after year, a testament to the master.
