I was amused reading the recent On the Runway Blog in the NY TIMES on Birkenstocks, Birkenstocks are on the Move. I have been wearing Birkenstocks since I was a young girl. Absent any designers or celebrities who’ve more recently become cool, I would paint or dye my birkenstocks different colors and put studs and patches on as well. I even tried changing the buckle once – but that was a disaster – so I stuck with simpler ways to express my unique “Birkenstyle” in a sea of beige. Sam wears them too. Although I had to coax him a bit to even try them on – he has been wearing them ever since. No female (or male) hipster’s shoe closet is complete without Birkenstocks sitting among the Blahniks and Louboutins.

I have been inspired – I am going to make a pair of Biker Birkens. Not like Giambattista Valli, which are too clunky IMHO, or the Isabel Marant , which are too cutesy for what I want here – something more in line with Saint Laurent, which I love, if only the toes were pointy. (I am a pointy toe shoe person – but that’s another post for another day). I have some cool silver studs I purchased awhile back to stud an old pair of cowboy boots (speaking of pointy toes). Since I never started that project, I am going to find the perfect pair of black leather birkens – Gizeh, perhaps, and get to work. I will post them as soon as I am finished so you can tell me what you think.

Giambattista Valli
